Made in Finland

Artek furniture is made Finland, where Aalto designs have been manufactured since the 1920s.

An alternative to traditional upholstery, linen belts are lightweight, breathable, and timeless way to offer support while maintain a slim silhouette. Densely interwoven, they will gently yield to the sitter for exceptional, custom comfort. Aalto began utilizing this method early on in his career as an architect and furniture designer, and it remains a popular choice today. Meet the new and improved Artek belt. The new webbing is duo-tone in color and the quality of the linen has been optimized. Artek collaborated with textile designer Hella Jongerius to create the new, modern color palettes. Contrasting warp (longitudinal) and weft (transverse) twisted yarns create the look of a three-dimensional weave to bring beautiful dimension to the new hues. For example, the red and white weave will look red and white up close, but from a distance it blends to give the appearance of a modern rose tone. Even this monochromatic black colorway has the look of dimension with this new weaving technique. Please note: Artek updated its webbing in 2019. This webbing is new and improved, however, the color varies slightly from what you may have. We recommend contacting us for a sample if you are trying to match existing furniture. This webbing comes directly from the manufacturer and is currently used on the Chair 611, Armchair 406, and Lounge Chair 43. It is woven in Germany and has been pre-stretched and thermal treated for optimal durability.

How It's Made

The Making of Alvar Aalto Artek Furniture

About Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto is one of the greatest names in modern architecture and design.

Born Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (February 3, 1898 - May 11, 1976) in Kuortane, Finland, Alvar Aalto was noted for his humanistic approach to modernism. He studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology from 1916 to 1921, and returned to Jyväskylä, where he opened his first architectural office in 1923. The following year he married architect Aino Marsio, who would become his partner both in life and work.

About Artek

The name Artek was formed from the words "art" and "technology," which are central concepts to the modernist movement of the 1920's. In 1935, Artek was founded by four young idealists: Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Their mission statement was "to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of living by exhibitions and other educational means." Today, Artek still strives to achieve a synthesis of the art and technology and improve everyday life through it's products. Its pieces not only bring modernism to Finland, but transport Alvar Aalto's Nordic principles and style to the entire world.
